12 Angry Men

Hey guys the FDEG Actors are going 12 Angry Men this week. I have reserved a ticket for Thursday 2:30 performance. Does anyone else want to come. It would be good for us to see this all together. I'm going to ask if there are 7 more tickets available for then anyway :) x

Not about everything...

Following on from Kelly's post about accumulation, I was sent this video from South east dance of a new work called 'Not about everything' by Daniel Linehan:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa77aCS_BIU

It is similar to Accumulation in the sense that it is repetitive and slightly boring at times, but when you get past that it is both hypnotising and really makes you think about what he is saying, and the changes of rhythm both in his voice and his movement.

Can we use this and accumulation as inspiration for how we can get across a meaning to an audience. Repetition is a strong way of making a statement!

Transitions...

Some info research to back up ideas:
This idea of transition seems to be descriptive of ageing and dying. I thought this idea could be useful in signifying our theme. I thought we could represent this using materials, lighting and sounds etc….

Signs of dying

Transition of senses and physical ability into a higher power of seeing.

Also thinking movement wise…the idea of transition and piecing together what we’ve discussed. I LOVE the idea of having one limb not really working like what Eloise suggested. This got me thinking and I know it’s dated as sin but looking at Trisha Brown’s Accumulation for inspiration what if we were to do an ‘accumulation in reverse’. So instead of adding and building movement we take away? Perhaps showing the body slowly shutting down? So as we were planning; still to mix the three dance vocabularies and styles with the music so, like old 1940s foxtrot jive, hip hop, and contemporary. We start frantically layered with movement in this queue and bit by bit we take away a layer or “limb” if you will. Obviously it will be absolutely nothing like Trisha brown’s accumulation but I thought this is useful to visualize what I’m trying to say.

Imagine…..in a queue. We’re dancing in unison all facing in front of us. Dancing this fluid original vocabulary we’ve created adding all movements together continuous dancing and gradually dropping a limb’s movement for example. The right arm is now by our sides and “dead” our movement continues yet the arm stays motionless. And so on….I really would like to experiment with this tomorrow guys. So are we all set on creating 4-8 counts for each piece of music ready for tomorrow to experiment?

right guys i have been thinking and i think for funsies we should do our own cover of  somebody i used to know  take like an hr :) maybe with a cheeky gnome in the background teehee :)
hope youve all had a good weekend :)

This is the weird Eurovison Song Contest entry. She is singing in Russian but if you focus on the screen behind her, she slowly ages. Just a bit of inspiration about fear of death maybe. :D

New Room :)

Hey Guys!
So blog one for this room...
What Kelly was saying about steering clear of looking like club dancers, how about we stay with the bus stop idea and form a queue by the bus stop sign in the night club? Then we could choose lighting so it shows us differently but would still fit in the room.

On a set note, this is what we listed as what we want:
... 2 Projectors
... fog machine?
...Birdies
...lighting rig (already in the BlackBox)
... Lots of material/gauze for the cubicles.

Signifiers =
...smells of beer soaked tissues around the room
... lavander/elderly smells such as soap
...werther's originals
...sign post of elderly people, boys and girls toilets
...tea cups and saucer's

can we think of anymore?

Have a sunny afternoon!

Script

So the script,

heres more or less what we said earlier....but i was also thinking, what if we use Laurens real name. So people identify with her, so they are expecting some weird character reaction to being woken up? So they know its just Lauren. Then maybe we just say her name is protected for security reasons in the police tape. Also I wanted to say after my think on the loo that the idea kind of reminds me of the strange uncomfortable-ness of Clockwork Orange. They do Singing in the Rain and beat that guy up and rape the woman. Still singing.

Anyway, earlier...

Wake Sally up.

Get Sally Out of bed and in to the chair for breakfast.

Feed Sally

Get Sally Dressed for school.

Thats what we got basically. But the question Andrew asked earlier about us not addressing this as a Dream like moment...being the only problem. It has stuck with me...

For this we can say we were just testing an element of the piece and are working on it?

but for development so it is fresh for them when they see it.........
maybe this could be in a weird way the way we show them our way of thinking. i'm not sure how we would achieve it. But keep it in mind, so this lens we use to show them the same scene with is kind of the analytical way we want them to look at the rest of the piece, say if it was at the beginning?

Does that make sense? I will explain tomorrow any way.

So any script furthering ideas..?

Hey guys spent some time looking into these repressed sexual references, fears and desires. Also thought a lot about names of "diners" at the table and remembered a literature term I learned in my A-levels. For the life of me I couldn't remember what it was called but I knew it was a specific technique used for characters in literature. After a bit of research, I now remember! If we carry on this idea of naming the roles using descriptive traits and play on words of their chosen sexual reference; we are using 'literary onomastics'. For example 'Cruella Deville' has evil connotations much like her character, this is an example of using literary onomastics. Also this is applied to the seven dwarfs e.g: Happy, grumpy, sleepy etc...

We've used names as a signifier in our gameshow scene; which turned out to be one of the most recognised from the audience. So its good to use to our advantage.

A reference for us:
Nilsen, A, Nilsen, D. (2007) Names and naming in young adult literature. Scarow Press.

Here are some I thought of for us:

Threesome- ‘Tri’
Narcissus- ‘Narc’ ‘Narcy’ ‘Cissus’
Paedophile- ‘Pete’
Rape- ‘Vic’
Prostitute- ‘Harlotte’
Pain???
Oedipus???

Any more suggestions? I also have yet to be inspired for the others...
I also added two more possible sexual themes/references. One of the most common sexual fears/problems in women is the loss of their libido and sexual drive. They apparently hit their peak of sexual libido at 35? As it is so common it seems fitting for us to include it?
Also doing a bit of Oedipus research and came across the 'Electra Complex' which is similar to Oedipus but in short terms it is the female version and their sexual desire towards their fathers? I thought this is also interesting?

1. Electra Complex- 'Electra'
2. No sexual drive/libido-

3some

So been doing some research into the number three and its more in depth connotations. I have found a lot of potential 2nd and 3rd layer visual aspects but I think the 1st layer (more obvious signifiers) will come from acting and text.

Fish by Andy Warhol

Ice cream by Andy Warhol

Knives by Andy Warhol

Three peaches on a plate by Henri Fantin-Latour

Three trout by Klatt

Kiwi's (Unknown)

All very inspiring titles, I thought they could be good starting points for food ideas for the table in front of my character.
Other food possibilities for 3some are:
3 peas in a pod
In maths 3 is approx pi as in (3.14159) so there could be a pie
In bowling 3 strikes in a row is called a Turkey
3 little pigs (in blankets)
3 utensils (knife,fork,spoon)
3 Meals a day
The Greek word for 3 is Gamma ... or Gammon
classic Mc Donald's comes in 3's (Burger, fries, drink)

.... this is making me hungry

Also, in Latin and Roman and Chinese numerals three is this... III  so maybe certain long foods like green beans could be laid out like this (also representing three penis's (or peni)?)

A way of structuring my role within this room, it could happen in 3 sections (a trilogy if you will) a beginning, middle and end... obviously ending with a climax.

Other non-food related info about 3, but stuff that links:
Greek Mythology - 3 fates
A triangle has 3 sides (love triangle)
3 Primary colours (red, green and Blue) possible costume/lighting/make-up for my character
Sigmund Freud talks about the Id, Ego and Superego, possible character traits
Body: 3 measurements: chest, waist and hips

3 is the atomic number for Lithium, a silvery white metal (another colour to play with visually) but once it is in contact with moisture (wetness, like orgasm?) it corrodes to a dull black tarnished colour. Like the shame and guilt after having naughty sexual experiences maybe? I hope you can see where I am going with this.

Sayings:
2's company, threes a crowd
Third times the charm
Third time lucky
Luck comes in threes
Ceaser "I came, I saw, I conqured" (3 parts) also... Came or Cum?

Tri (as in three) sounds like Try ... I could play on this with regard to speech and say to the audience for instance "Just TRY it"

Hopefully you can see what I mean about this research being layers 2 and 3. With very little layer 1's here. But I hope to expand on this and work backwards  to discover ways to make the 3some theme become more obvious to an audience.

Brighton Festival

Hey guys as I mentioned earlier I think we should definetly go and see Dreamthinkspeak. am going to find out tonight if we can get some tickets. The tickets are between 22.50 and 25. its a lot but from what I gather it could be really benefical too us.
Charis can you email Hannah and ask if maybe she can get us some tickets cheaper maybe?
Also would quite like to go and see Apparition which is on 17th and 18th May and is 17.50.
Also would love to see DV8, Can We Talk About This? is listed under dance, which is cool because they are primarily physical theatre. 24th-26th May. After collab but it could be useful for you guys's dissertations?

Yoga and Fitness

Just making sure we're all prepared for a fitness session tomorrow as we discussed having a short fitness class each morning to build our stamina and get us ready for the day....

I would also like to lead a short 15 minute yoga session before we start also just to relax and stretch our bodies and minds for the day and if we like it we can do this before every session??

Thanks guys see you tomorrow!

Feel free to bring in proper weird rainforest music or what not lol....

Symbols in dreams...

"....Symbolism: Where complex or vague concepts are converted into a dream image. For this, the mind may use the image of a similar sounding (more recognisable) word instead or use a similar looking less intrusive object. According to Freud, dream symbols are for the most part sexual in meaning thus many dreams (but not all) have a sexual correlation.

For example, Freud suggested that objects such as tree-trunks, ties, all weapons, sticks, balloons, rockets and other elongated objects were all symbols for the male organ/an erection. Where boxes, cases, chests, cupboards, ovens, suitcases and other hollow objects represented the female genitalia. A room usually signified a woman but so could the whole house, a door or the whole dream landscape. The simple act of walking up a staircase, steps or ladders could also signify a sexual act.

Freud also had a fascination with symbols of castration, which he believed were represented in a dream by baldness, teeth falling out and the cutting of hair. In addition, the genitals could also be represented by another part of the body. For example, the male organ could be represented by a hand, the female organ represented by a mouth or an eye."

INTERESTINGGGGGGGGG GUYSSSSSSSSSSSS..........

Actual Dream Analysis

An extract to help us all:

Freud described the actual technique of psychoanalytic dream-analysis in the following terms:

"You entirely disregard the apparent connections between the elements in the manifest dream and collect the ideas that occur to you in connection with each separate element of the dream by free association according to the psychoanalytic rule of procedure. From this material you arrive at the latent dream-thoughts, just as you arrived at the patient's hidden complexes from his associations to his symptoms and memories... The true meaning of the dream, which has now replaced the manifest content, is always clearly intelligible. [Freud, Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis (1909); Lecture Three]"

Freud listed the distorting operations that he claimed were applied to repressed wishes in forming the dream as recollected: it is because of these distortions (the so-called "dream-work") that the manifest content of the dream differs so greatly from the latent dream thought reached through analysis—and it is by reversing these distortions that the latent content is approached.

The operations included:
Condensation – one dream object stands for several associations and ideas; thus "dreams are brief, meagre and laconic in comparison with the range and wealth of the dream-thoughts."
Displacement – a dream object's emotional significance is separated from its real object or content and attached to an entirely different one that does not raise the censor's suspicions.
Representation – a thought is translated to visual images.
Symbolism – a symbol replaces an action, person, or idea

^

This is an extract from wiki just as a summary for Freud's analysis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_interpretation

Also, it'll be interesting and useful to take some ideas from research into theorists opposing Freud.

This is a book called; Freud's Dream of Interpretation. Ken Frieden speaks of Freud's manipulation of patients and how his analysis isn't accurate as the dreamer instantly creates a context for their dream as they re-tell said psychoanalyst what they dreamt. This is interesting to keep in mind when we create the rooms and how the audience make their connections between the signifiers.

hey guys
i have been thinking a lot about the rooms and what we have been discussing and i think that one of the rooms should be all about the beautiful. i have been looking at Freud with regards to beautiful dreams ect and the section that stood out the most for me was the part about how although some dreams are beautiful he always managed to find a sinister edge, or turn it into something less than beautiful and tawdry and then of course sexual!

theses are just a few that i have found over the past few days some are beautiful to watch others a bit strange in my eyes :)

Need you help!

So here's the thing as you all know my car has failed me and now I don't have one! To get to uni everyday I need to schedule and plan around when my mum doesn't use her car. What I am getting at is that I absolutely cannot have the car on friday when we agreed to come in instead of monday (tomorrow). As you all know I live over an hour's drive away so public transport is not only much more expensive for me, but it is also double the time each way. What I am asking is if it is possible to come in tomorrow for a full day as opposed to friday? I know this is last minute and not everyone will see it and agree. I just desperately do not want to miss friday as I am dedicated as sin but at the same time it is a massive struggle for me if friday is for the sake of it and it wouldn't bother anyone to do monday? It would really help me out!

Thanks guys

Class feedback for gameshow

General: it was fun, energetic, exciting and funny. It was well structured, and they liked the 'puppety' movement. Also liked the cue cards even though they don't normally like being told what to do. Enjoyed the fast paced music and rushed feel of the piece. Someone thought it was being performed backwards.

Noticed signifiers: fish make-up, like slimey snake like presenter. The cans of beans were buzzers, grapes, lionbar, bank references. The director (Lauren) pointed at signifiers e.g. Cross on the floor and briefcase. Noticed the reaction of us falling to the floor when audience clapped.

What they would do differently: clearer signifiers, make the meaning of the piece more visible, would like a natural reaction e.g. Laugh etc. Would like to be more involved and maybe take the food. Raked seating so everyone can see. Try just holding cue cards to see if audience react rather than verbally saying it. Quieter music so can hear audiences reaction. A phrase (catchphrase) at the end or during it that represents the theme of the piece so the audience can leave with a clearer understanding of it... Or something that makes them question it?

Some ideas and helpful links for Narcissus room?

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=zsebniNMH_kC&pg=PA45&dq=narcissism+freud+narcissus&hl=en#v=onepage&q=narcissism%20freud%20narcissus&f=false

This one speaks directly about the myth itself and references what other artists, psychoanalysts, theorists and authors say about it.

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=OlCw21v7oX8C&pg=PA208&dq=narcissism+freud+narcissus&hl=en#v=onepage&q=narcissism%20freud%20narcissus&f=false
^
I’d be lying if I said I understood all of this but I did manage to take on some particular parts that could be good for us to note.

In the study of love- there are two types of object one can love. Narcissism is present in a narcissistic view of loving either; something that is representative of what you are, what you were and what you want to be. Or, an anaclitic object of attachment, either in the woman who feeds one or the man that protects him. I thought this would be interesting to play with.

Also Freud is said to have linked narcissism with homosexuality.

This also explains that if Narcissus had a third object of love other than himself and his mother, he would have escaped a psychological state called ‘primary narcissism’ which in simpler terms means he would have developed to love other objects. Freudian terms; he was ego-libidal as opposed to object-libidal.

Self-love/narcissus random ideas. These are simply to just spark some inspiration.
-reflection/mirrors
-seeing yourself in/ identifying with someone so maybe particular features, e.g: blondes, green eyes, names, body, voice, character in a film or painting etc.
-seeing yourself in something/ identifying with, e.g; a tree, a cloud, a car, and animal
-sexuality: masturbation, sex tapes-video film use in performance maybe?

Hey Team!
So we've got a respectable thing to show tomorrow :) Happy Days.
Just wondering what are our thoughts on costume?
Just thought if we decide on something similar, it will tie it all together :)
Much love, enjoy your evenings!

Mondays or Fridays

Hi gang,

I was just having a think about our convo earlier as to which day we should come in and do work.

Seeing as Andrew works on Fridays and the only reasons people gave for not wanting to come in on a Monday was because they 'liked having that day off' or 'to sort their life out on that day' I think it would be wise to come in on Mondays so that we have the whole team. Because we all know how hard it is when we don't have everyone. And let's face it - we need an extra day!

Also Lauren said they arnt putting sharings on a Friday ever (we should double check this with Vanessa), so we will still get a 3 day weekend. (or a day to do dissertations :D )

How do you all feel about this? And should we start this as of next Monday 23rd?

prague

baked beans? uncanny. cant wait to hear about it. the prague workshop of devising in silence will take place this friday at 3pm. If you are interested, we could link up via skype. will send you details if you are interested.

Typed up progress for 17.04.12

Venue Possibilities: Rooms around the college, Derelict Building in Worthing town.
Other idea: turning a room into a club

Room Ideas: Financial Struggle,  Sexual Boat, Vertigo, Fear of Death, Fear of ageing, Love of food.

Expansion of Financial Struggle:
Quick Quiz - Game show that ties the piece together.

Journey: Semiotics/subliminal - debt advertising, music, posters, radio, TV, Student Finance Text - evoking that feeling of panic and worry,

Room: Our theme tune, Booing, clapping and laughing. Chaos, Company Logos (wanger, laydayUK), Contestant Names (Natalie West, Harry Fax, Roberta Balinda Scott, Santana Dairy), Host is Lord Theador Sebastian Burton. Sponsored by Baked Beans (also Buzzers), Buzz words - "Further Action", "Final Warning", "Notice", can be stamped on audience. Grapes - representative of money and wealth. Tree - money tree or "money doesn't grow on trees". Dead Lion - showing broken pride. Advert showing a Great White Shark killing - don't mess with loan sharks. Boards to control the audience: "Applause", "Boo", "Cheer" - Printed on bank statements and written in red (urgent).

Qualities of a game show: Game shows started on radio as call-in quizzes then moved to TV in the late 40s, the embody "the American Dream" (Bob Boden) and allow DREAMS TO COME TRUE!!!! They are a chance to get rich quick and show off talent, and anyone can win them!
They have Suspense (like opening the last box in Deal or No deal), cheesy set and ambiance, leave it on a cliff hanger before every advert, make it personal (sob stories) so that audience wants them to win, add temptation to make jackpot more even at the risk of loosing everything, a catchphrase (like Mastermind's "I've started so I'll finish", a lovable host, lame team-names, like able team captains (like celebrities or someone normal) Useful link - Bob Boden (Vice President of Production, Fox Reality Channel) gives expert advice on What is the origin of the game show?: http://www.videojug.com/interview/all-about-game-shows-2

Qualities of a Game show host: Famous Hosts Bill Cullen (Winner Take All) and Bob Barker (The Price is Right) were both charming, funny, trustworthy, engaging, knew how to have a good time, had style, enthusiasm, comic timing and got the most out of the contestants. A good game show host is not only to MC but is a performer and a host, keeping the show going and playing a crucial role.  Bob Boden gives advice on What are the qualities of a game show host?: http://www.videojug.com/interview/game-show-hosts-2

Types of Game show: Physical Challenge (The Cube, Takeshi's castle), Specialist Knowledge (Mastermind), Paired Competitive (Catchphrase, Supermarket Sweep), Team Competitive (The Chase, Eggheads), Single Competitive (The Weakest Link, Golden Balls), General Knowledge (Who wants to be a millionaire, University Challenge). Obviously most overlap.

Things to do: Bring in Baked Bean tins without labels, make name badges, make applause boards, research typical gameshow movement to add as choreography for the sharing, research more 'dream-like' and uncanny ways to represent financial struggle.

17-04-12

^^^^^The baked beans labels are done!^^^^^

I also thought 'Death of a salesmen' by Arthur Miller I studied it in A-level English and I thought it would be helpful for our references to financial struggle and striving for financial security...here's a link to help find out about it more.

Also, I have tarot cards (obv), they're 'Titania's Fortune Cards' and they are a bit of a rarity so they are pretty special! Anyway the card representing money and fortune is a goldfish???? Another symbol/image/colour/style we could work with....

Invisible Theatre

hello, had a amazing revelation...
Invisable theatre.
Theatre that happens in a public arena without those around being aware.
This is for sure uncanny, we can bring that something hidden into the light.
We can stage something like don't know an arguement between two people in a public place. Then the uncanny-ness can be what the audiences reaction is. they learn about themselves. I can think of some more extreme ideas. Also this would mean we wouldn't necisserily need to advertise our show. it can be a 'Secret' as to when we stage it. Like we joked before about the while show being us persuading the tutors to give us an A?
Just an idea...

article on dance

http://www.digitalcultures.org/Library/Mitra.pdf

not sure what it relates to but interesting about the dancer's body.

Pareidolia

hello people, again iam having another read of todays Metro on my way to Eastbourne and I have come across a small article about an 'elephant-like' rock formation that has formed on the surface of Mars. The article talks about this being a form of 'Pareidolia..'

"..when we see things that aren't really there-it's more often the face of Jesus on a slice of toast..."

So it is that kind of thing, like when you look at clouds and see animals or a car for example.

Just saying- definetly UNCANNY and not just weird...*puts away plastic fork*

Suggestion to the Director and TheSecret folk...

The ideas that have transpired from our process to date are endless, all relevant and insightful yet vast. ‘Manufacturing the uncanny’ has indeed become our motto/tagline. I’ve been thinking of ways to string all these together, and into the new setting of the piece that we have seemed to agree on. We all want to begin our making as quickly and successfully as possible. Now we need to consider that our ideas bank is full, there’s no real structure or foundation to piece it all together. We’ve worked backwards which I think is still good! But when we make could it be useful for us to plant a structure even if for a week to try a new way of working?

What came to mind for me was the idea of repression, from uncanny. I know what stuck with us that inspired our last sharing was; “…something that should remain hidden being brought to light.” For this, I reflected on a lot of our ideas and they stem from dreams to surrealism, make up, light and sound designs to different acting and dancing techniques. However we have not set a basis or structure to what these elements can be devised to/on. I propose an idea of structure in terms of making and would like to put forward the idea of establishing maybe 4-6 emotions or feelings or representations of a human that are commonly ‘repressed’ for example; anger, alcoholism, sexuality etc. And we could aim to bring these to light, using our ideas?
These different examples could be represented and installed in different rooms of the college, using all the ideas we have to implement.

This may help translate my idea:
http://michael-catley.suite101.com/dream-interpretation-sigmund-freud-a150180

This talks about a dreamer, dreaming of a dog peeling a banana. The article then shows the analysis stages of Freud’s theory to breakdown what this could mean. This resulted in suggesting that the dreamer could be angry and fear losing a desired partner to a friend? Sounds crazy but this is the theory of our main inspiration; FREUD. Mr Uncanny himself. Now manufacturing the uncanny could come about by us working backwards and creating the symbolic images themselves by us starting with a meaning. E.G: We start with ‘fear of losing someone’, use all research, ideas, workshops, analysis, make up, light, sound, acting, dance and create….A gorilla eating an apple, whilst rowing…??? So……..we are being uncanny by using the interpretation of dreams in analysing in reverse to create our own symbolisms!!!!

As per usual I have plenty more to say…so when we met again you’ll be getting an earful.

This idea isn’t a new tangent for more ideas it is simply an example of a structure to follow and/or theme to base said ideas upon.

What I’d like to suggest if this helps, is for us all to stop thinking about all the ideas we could incorporate in regards to our disciplines and what we’d like to include. But to maybe think of what structures we could use to set the piece and be a tangible foundation to what we incorporate our ideas.

My idea is just one and doesn’t necessarily mean it will work, but from reflecting I personally feel we need a basis like this, I’m sure you’ve all got amazing and most probably better suggestions for a structure so please share!

I hope I haven’t confused anyone, I just do not want our focus to be blurry and not coherent with each other for when we need to buckle down and make and experiment. Our ideas are complex and great but we need to reflect this in our practice, like the tutors have said.

P.S. To save time; is it possible if we all consider coming in on the Monday for a full day of discussion? I know we are not scheduled but a whole day of initial discussion before could really save us wasting times during “experiment hours”.
