10am - Pick Lauren, Projector, Mirror and Cake stand up.

10:30am - Dress the Blackbox.

1pm - Move on to Studio 1 - Game Show - Re-jig and improve.

2:00pm - Lunch/Blood, Sweat and Tears in Worthing at The Dome.

Thursday at 4/5 dress hallways?

Sure we dont want to change it all to a mayan piece ... last chance?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00qmf1w/Apocalypto/
I hope you like the edit I have spent a couple of hours on it and not touched the video edits YET. This Idea although changed near the time of performance I think is genius and will be very effective.

NIGHTCLUB...

Hey guys, today I made my opinions quite clear about the movement in the nightclub room, and you all know how I feel. Well, Tim, Caris, Zachary and I all were discussing the possibilities for this room and with the help of Grotowski's Via Negativa we may have a great alternative!

We came to the agreement that the room, once finished, will be rich as an overall atmosphere with plenty of signifiers. We further questioned whether our movement would distract from this, as it has said to have done this in our last sharing? Thinking of how we could use us as performers to the best we can for the sake of the piece we have come to this conclusion....

Duck sauce will now say a series of ascending numbers (ages)... 18 21 35 42 63 84 (all relevant to 42- number of life). For each age we as party goers, same as the audience, will briefly become the age in our natural mannerisms for the duration of the age??? e.g: 18---lots of wooaahhing and jumping like when YOU WERE 18. 21---(I can't remember what we suggested). 35- all stop and make a phonecall to our kids at home (mobiles). 42---hang by the bar for some intellectual conversation. 63---we all congregate by the bus stop. (senior citizen buss passes)84---we will use the extras as a carers to lead us through the crowd in the same direction right before the bus comes in....

All the while, when the music reaches 42, it will slowly decrease in volume and tempo so that the entire atmopshere appears to wilt, however keeping the bass... it will end in the bus lights.

These all seem really quite simple however we are all in agreement that it could be strong enough AND subtle enough to finish this room without distracting the important signifiers?

We can discuss tomorrow what you  guys think!? Hope you love it....

POSTERS

HERE ARE MINE...I MAY NOT BE A WIZ ON THE PC LIKE MY MUCH ADMIRED COLLEAGUE TIM, BUT THEY AIN'T HALF BAD FOR WORD I MUST SAY? :)
DO AS MANY AS POSS GUYS SO WE HAVE A SELECTION FOR COPY TOMORROW.....

Sunday, 13 May 2012

Regarding the nightclub scenario... From the feedback we got I'm a little skeptical of the audience's perception of our movement, and how and where we're dancing in the space. Its difficult to explain in words but I have this image of two sets of gestural contact duos continuously moving around the space e.g; at the bar getting a drink, or going to the DJ booth requesting a song, or having a conversation (like in a club?) OR getting a cup of tea, polishing the pictures, taking blood pressure....etc (like an old people's home?)....

Take a look at this vid of Frantic assembly and you'll get a bit more of what I'm thinking? The way devise is very similar to the way I like and that gestural style could be really significant in this room as we base each room on signifiers??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC-dkYZOUVo

I then imagined once the music changes it could all go slow motion tempo as we take our places at the bus stop  all dancing our previous phrases of movement in slow motion until the bus comes??

I just think it is much more relevant and gives it more purpose and depth??
Let me know what you guys think?

photo framed photos they r not amaze but as you can see frm a distance they are ok i hope ;)

Sexual room music.....

Hey guys so following Martyn's unfortunate predicament we're a bit stumped concerning getting music finished in time to make movement. Now I have found two tracks we could put together; the first is one of the Berlioz tracks we all liked from the tantric sex research. The second is actually from Mozart's opera; 'The Magic Flute'. Now there are two reasons why I have chosen this track, firstly; a flute is a phallic object...and secondly this piece is the accompaniment for the current Durex advert??? YES!

The way I have imagined and will further edit, is that the berlioz track plays and fades out at approx 1.58, where the second track will fade in.

I imagine the rocking/flocking fitting quite nicely with the intro as its quite repetitive and has a curious quality. And where the second track fades in, I imagine a lighting change, the runner comes in with the plastic and the  whole dynamic should change. And there is a climatic ending! Bonus! I'll explain more movement ideas and choreography tomorrow so listen here until then. Hope you feel inspired!

hair and make up

hey guys right bee working on the hair and make up designs this weekend and i have decided to make everything doll like so big dollie eyes red lips and ringlets. in case your are wondering i have reasearched what dolls mean in dreams and i could mean childhood which would work with the night club as it is a fear of aging and also can be because you are thinking about a child which works in the game show as its financial struggle and the overall make up fits with the dinner. i did two designs one which had dark eyes and i look more like a pshyco doll so i have added colour. as i said i will be bleaching my hair to match tim coz it will be easyier for me to go blonde rather than tim go dark. so i gona be doign wigs for all of the girls so everyone looks the same and also it means that all i have to do is set the wigs and put them on which means we will have more time on the thursday to rehearse, they are all going to be brown wigs coz we have more brown wigs the same colour. i am going to be bringing the designs for the make up tomorrow and im gona need to set the wigs in the morning so i can dress the either tomorrow afternoon or tuesday morning. see you guys tomorrow xx

Mondayyyyy

Ok hey all I hope your weekends are going well and we are all having fun. I have some bad news, my car tonight basically has given up the ghost (my release bearing in my clutch isn't working meaning it won't drive) as there are no garages open tomorrow there is not much i can do untill they start work on it at 8 Monday morning. As soon as the car is fixed I'll be on my way so will hopefully be in in the afternoon however there is a possibility it may not be. I will be in Tuesday for sure I will be doing alota editing on Monday if Kelly you can mail me the tracks and I will have a chat with you about glueing them together other than that I'll work on the nightclub scene I'm really sorry guys I just wanted to let you know now as its the easiest way to tell you all Martyn. X

Sexual room and my...role...

hey guys just to keep you updated, I was shopping for my bits for the sexual room.
I was thinking that baby food is probably wrong no? I may be wrong but the demographic...
Is more todler, kind of 4 to 7? I am trrying to word this tastefully. So I got like a small girls
Party cups, plates and some haribo bags. Fruit shoots? I think its mire suggestive. I was
Going to get Calpol as well maybe? I got some party poppers... Suggestive too.. Lol.

What do we think?x

The Lion, the Socks and the Clearplastic

SO.....
Here is pride...

And I managed to get 42 pairs of socks today, most are thermal bed socks but they ran out so I got stripy trainer socks as well. They had NO red white and blue 3packs so I had to climb through the carnage of socks in the 99p store to find ones that meet our standard. (I also got the pens - not felt tips, they are gel pens in the colours of blue red and black, the best the 99p store did i'm afraid)

With regard to the clear plastic wall we want. The stuff my Dad had in the shed is good in the sense that it is the perfect height when unrolled and it is 50m long so we can use it twice and also to cover the table cloth.... But, it's not completely see through... which makes me think that we either deal with it and come to a compromise by not having it up the whole time and maybe having a runner to drag it across the length of the room near the end of the performance so that we can throw food on it... or scrap the idea cos I don't think we are going to find anything better or cheaper (cos we got it for free at the end of the day)

Thoughts??

from my book The Secret

sozzzzzzzzzzzz but........

the book i found called the secret the blurb at the back sounded awesome:

"it has been passed down through the ages, highly coveted, hidden, lost, stolen, and
brought for vast sums of money. this centuries-old secret has been understood by some
of the most prominent people in history: plato, Galileo, Beethoven, Edison, Carnegeie, Einstein-
along with other inventors, theologians, secientists, and great thinkers.
now the Secret is being revealed to the world.

"as you learn the Secret, you will come to know how you can have, be, or do anything you want.
you will come to know who you really are. you will come to know the true magnificence that awaits
               you in life."

thought this was interesting :)
this is a bit of fun :)

Also I found this one before I read this extract which is still my favourite piece? Something about the violin is think represents that frantic, impulsive, sexual element.

Lullaby for Lauren

... I can't type the tune unfortunately, and yes... I made it up, you will find it nowhere on Google :P

~
Now the day is done,
Sleep so softly in your bed.

Say Goodbye, to the sun,
Rest your ever weary head.

Eyelids close, sleep now sleep,
Safe upon your feather bed.

Hush now, Goodnight, Sweet dreams, Sleep tight in your dream land,
There you'll be. Stars and fireflies dance for thee.

I will find you, wait for me.
On your boat on dreamland sea.

Eyelids close, sleep now sleep,
There's no need for counting sheep.

Dreamland moon, shines so bright.
Blue upon your peaceful cheek.

Breathing deep, slumber soft.
Angels are watching over you.

Drift and swim in bliss,
Each breeze watches you rest.

Eyelids close, sleep now sleep,
Safe upon your feather bed.

Midnight chimes, moonlight shines.
Don't wake baby, softly tread.

Say Goodbye, to the sun,
Rest my ever weary head.

Theories of Consciousness. Subjective and Qualitative

Ok so I came across Theories of Consciousness when I was researching Via Negativa, I thought it was quite relevant when looking at our semiotics (signs and signifiers)

"When I have a conscious experience of the blue sky, there is something it is like for me to have the experience. In particular, there is a bluish way it is like for me to have it. This "blush way it is like for me" constitutes the phenomenal character of my experience. Phenomenal character is the property that makes a phenomenally conscious state at all.
The  bluish way its like for me has two distinguishable components: (i) the bluish component and (ii) the for-me component. I call the former qualitative character and the latter subjective character. To a first approximation, phenomenal character is just the compresence of qualitative character and subjective character. To a second approximation, there is a more specific division of conceptual labor between qualitative and subjective character: a phenomenally conscious state's qualitative character is what makes the phenomenally conscious state it is, while its subjective character is what makes it a phenomenally conscious state at all. Thus, my conscious experience of the blue sky is the conscious experience it is in virtue of it's bluishness, but it is a conscious experience at all in virtue of its for-me-ness." (Kriegel, U, Subjective Consciousness: A self-representational theory)

It is very round-a-bout, but I think the bold sections are the areas that describe and explain the theory best. Read it through a few times because it is very repeatative and confusing.

Basically saying that in order to have a conscious experience is its divided to two sub-categories, for example of we change the for-me-ness or qualitative character to subconscious and the bluish component or subjective character to literal or the observed-by-the eye component. It is a little easier to decipher.

I can explain tomorrow if you still don't understand. Just some more research to add for our theory of observations.

Pics of us...and one on the end just for laughs

Sorry it took so long...

Add the logo to your images...

Hi Team, I have attached a copy of the logo so that we can add them to our posters that we are creating for the quiz/club transition hallway.

I thought it might be nice to have the logo dotted around in the hallway, and within the flyers and posters etc, some big some small...

"ooo I've seen that weird feather thing before!.. uncanny!"

Wallpaper

Do we still want wallpaper for a room? As I have sourced some from freecycle:

Hi, I have 2 part rolls of flowery 1970's wallpaper. One brown, medium flowers, one pink, small flowers. The small flowers will not look patterned from a distance I think. They are slightly vinyl too. Anyway, you are very welcome to them if you would like them.
hey y'all i was looking at the whole green company recycle stuff and i found this article on the stage how cool is this :

http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/newsstory.php/32334/website-helps-companies-recycle-unwanted-sets

a lot of companies use this and have set up their own off this innovative idea :) xoxo

Transitionsssss

Here's a rather rough 'paint' plan of the transition Eloise and I mapped out thought of today. It is not accurate at all but it is a rough idea with some pictures to help imagine the textures and look of the corridors could look like. Have a little look and we can discuss more tomorrow.
TRANSITION FROM STUDIO 2 TO STUDIO 1
Latex textures from rubber gloves, and condoms hanging from ceiling. Use of cling film to create a partition for audience to queue round.

TRANSITION FROM STUDIO 1 TO BLACKBOX
Weathered alleyway look, merging posters/leaflet signifiers from finance, nightclub and elderly references.

Storage

I think tomorrow, like we mentioned, it is necessary to bring all props/items/material/costumes etc we potentially already have to bring in and keep in the dressing rooms. Even off the top of our heads if we think something could be used? Then we can begin making some kind of inventory for what we have and what we need which HAS to be ordered tomorrow I feel. That way if we're organised enough we can be extra prepared  for the limited amount of time to dress the rooms and practice within them?

Also please try and print off as many posters or fliers as you can this week in the evenings for time-saving.

Also Mr Bulled is going away so he can't create an ashtray thing for us but i have a potential more creative idea which i can share with you guys tomorrow.

So fliers and ALL potential props and material etc tomorrow for storage.....
:)

Job opportunity for techies...

Desperately scrolling through www.artsjobs.org.uk on a Sunday evening as you do, and came across this job:

http://www.wmsf.ac.uk/Mainfolder/documents/Staff%20vacancies/PPA-Performing-Arts.pdf

Now I didn't realize it was a technician's vacancy, so I certainly would be an undesirable candidate. However I thought I'd pass on the link just in case Zachary or Martyn were interested? (Collecting my Karma points :)

P.S. Vanessa please feel free to forward to anyone else you can!

Thanks guys

Reps meeting

From Blackboard:

Reps meeting re shows

Posted on: Friday, 4 May 2012
Can group reps please meet with me and theatre technicians on Tuesday at 3pm in the bar.
thank you

Are our reps Kelly and Tim?
Do you want us to stick around so you can brief us on what went down at the meeting?
The meeting would be a perfect time to discuss our final show date (17th), also that we may require extra technicians...

...does anyone else have any ideas about what our lovely reps should bring up at the meeting if they get the opportunity?

Types of Dreamer

Types of dreamer we discussed... may need potential name changes :)

Reflective Dreamer

They are someone who dreams of their day. Subconsciously dreams focus on memories that live in the past. They contemplate and are nostalgic of the past. May have lived a happy life with lots to remember.

Sexual Dreamer

They are a social chameleon. Someone who craves human interaction and subconsciously constantly seek social gratification. They are overly aware of sexual connotations and have a confident personality. Wishful of sexual desires.

Fated Dreamer

They are someone who focuses on the future and there life has a lot of changes. Although they are dubious of change and are conscious of things ending, they are young at heart.

Travelling Dreamer

They are blissfully unaware of things around them. Does not over analyse or overthink situations. An endearing ignorance goes with initial instincts. And soars through life usually successful.

Struggler Dreamer

They crumble under pressure, leaves thing till the last minute. Adapts to change spontaneously. Analytical. They spend time focussing on wishful opportunities. Dreams of unrealistic goals.

Some brainwaves...

Just some ideas that could piece some loose ends together. Now watching our first beaut video (Eloise doll's masterpiece) again today has definitely got me inspired and taken me back to when we started the project...reflection. Our feedback for this video was so positive and strong, it was considered artistic and really provoked a feeling with our peers...punctum. Now, I mentioned today about filming our audience in the rooms and editing said film to display in the 'reflection' room. We all came to the instant conclusion that it wouldn't work...I beg to differ!

We have access to the skills and help of Fdeg techies who can oversee the technical requirements of parts of the rooms where our loveable techies and artistes Zachary and Martyn could work their mastermind magic on editing some footage in time for the reflection room. I know its a long shot and I am not suggesting Zachary and Martyn are not present in each room but they can dip in and out with the help of our kind volunteers? Alot of our requirements and Zachary and Martyn's work could be prepared in advance, and where it cannot be; can be when they are present...?

Let me know what you guys think?

Furthermore, I was also thinking of supplying each audience member with a torch for their journey to the rooms from theatre bar. Now this is where the link to our beautiful monochromatic video comes in. I remember in Evita they used those battery operated tea-light candles. Imagine 42 audience members walking in a dark corridor with pure exploration and anxiety on their faces, filmed in black and white, accompanied by our ever-favored track "Bloodstream". We could use gobos along the say to really re-create the effect of this video in such an artistic way. Again, like I mentioned today, our audience would get so much more from watching themselves in an artistic way than watching us. And I think a majority of elements of our dreams research are also present here?

I suggest watching the video back again and see what you can imagine? I hope I've sparked something in you guys regarding this idea. Tell me what you think and we can merge our visions and make it amazeballs!!!

One is a realistic stuffed lion lying down & measures 38cm tall & 51cm from nose to backside. The other is more of a cartoon type stuffed lion sitting up & measures 35cm tall. Both have manes i.e. Daddy lions!
Kind regards

Freecycle

So I have posted this on the Brighton Freecycle 'wanted' page.

Hi, we are Theatre Uni students in Brighton doing our final show and are in need of a few things, does anyone have:
plastic grapes or any fake plastic food, a toy lion, spare black or red fabric, fairy lights (working), tea-cups and saucers, a bus stop sign, bar stools or any bar props?
We are willing to pick-up and return items if you can only lend these things! We only have a small budget so are trying to find things for free. Cheers guys!

If anyone can do this too that would be great! Also if you want me to add anything else then let me know and I'll put it on :D

Progress/Breakthrough

Just a summary of our day...for those there and not to see..

Invites rather than an open show. 42 people (meaning of life..)
 > on that I was thinking that there is 40 BA's to be fair. We will be expected to invite everyone...to be honest I really think everyone is intrigued enough by our group that most will want to come. Again I think a second show may be needed. Maybe a BA showing could be an invited dress on the Wednesday night?
Also spooky, weird, or uncanny. That Apparition show is on 17th May also. At 7:30!!! Good omen :)

Questionnaire to involve and  decipher the piece for the audience.
 > To decide which of type of dreamer they are;
-Ageing Dreamer - Blackbox
-Reflective Dreamer - Studio 3
-Struggler Dreamer - Studio 1
-Sexual Dreamer - Studio 2
-Travelling Dreamer - Hallways/Journey from theatre bar

Perhaps they are the titles. Then I think it can give us a bigger banner to work under? Also that is the final rooming for the pieces. I think its a good way to work 5 different questions with 5 answers. Subconsciously.
E.G:

Q1.
-Answer 1 relates to Ageing
-Answer 2 relates to Reflection
-Answer 3 relates to Struggles
-Answer 4 relates to Sex
-Answer 5 relates to Travel

Then we have an uncanny moment because we have hopefully taught them something by tapping into their subconscious. The issue of placement with the questionnaire is a BIG deal.
Do we want to break their concentration during the show, thinking about these questions will take an audience away from the immersive (i know people hate that word but its what we are doing) nature of our show.
Or some theory here for you guys,
Verfremdunksteffekt - The alienation technique coined by Bertolt Brecht.
The use of SIGNS and SIGNIFIERS to make sure an audience remains critically aware and unemotionally involved. The use of the Questionnaire could do that for us. As well as all the semiotics and visual elements we use. So we break and allow them to answer question 2 after room 4 for example. So we incorporate asking them to do that. And I am sorry but please read this definition of Verfremdunksteffekt...

http://www.answers.com/topic/verfremdungseffekt

It sounds like exactly what we want to achieve.
"aims at giving to familiar aspects of reality the appearance of being unfamiliar in order to arouse the spectator's critical judgement."

Reflective Room

The reflective room can be our own reflective dream. What I think might be nice also is to use that 3D effect in this room so say if we were to cover the rooms walls with material to project on to, then we can be behind and basically pushing against the material to add that ball hitting the screen from behind effect.

Wow. Brainwave. My head hurts now. But it kind of finally makes sense when I think of things in this way. Brecht-Freud. Match made in heaven? Perhaps.........?

Thoughts please :)

12 Angry Men

Hey guys the FDEG Actors are going 12 Angry Men this week. I have reserved a ticket for Thursday 2:30 performance. Does anyone else want to come. It would be good for us to see this all together. I'm going to ask if there are 7 more tickets available for then anyway :) x

Assessment Criteria: Stuff we should follow :)

Show/shared practice/ practical outcome

Show needs to:
1.     apply relevant and appropriate skills, pose no unprepared-for risk of harm or injury to self or others present, and be consistent with minimum requirements for duration and location of event set by the course;

Not about everything...

Following on from Kelly's post about accumulation, I was sent this video from South east dance of a new work called 'Not about everything' by Daniel Linehan:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa77aCS_BIU

It is similar to Accumulation in the sense that it is repetitive and slightly boring at times, but when you get past that it is both hypnotising and really makes you think about what he is saying, and the changes of rhythm both in his voice and his movement.

Can we use this and accumulation as inspiration for how we can get across a meaning to an audience. Repetition is a strong way of making a statement!

Transitions...

Some info research to back up ideas:
This idea of transition seems to be descriptive of ageing and dying. I thought this idea could be useful in signifying our theme. I thought we could represent this using materials, lighting and sounds etc….

Signs of dying

Transition of senses and physical ability into a higher power of seeing.

Also thinking movement wise…the idea of transition and piecing together what we’ve discussed. I LOVE the idea of having one limb not really working like what Eloise suggested. This got me thinking and I know it’s dated as sin but looking at Trisha Brown’s Accumulation for inspiration what if we were to do an ‘accumulation in reverse’. So instead of adding and building movement we take away? Perhaps showing the body slowly shutting down? So as we were planning; still to mix the three dance vocabularies and styles with the music so, like old 1940s foxtrot jive, hip hop, and contemporary. We start frantically layered with movement in this queue and bit by bit we take away a layer or “limb” if you will. Obviously it will be absolutely nothing like Trisha brown’s accumulation but I thought this is useful to visualize what I’m trying to say.

Imagine…..in a queue. We’re dancing in unison all facing in front of us. Dancing this fluid original vocabulary we’ve created adding all movements together continuous dancing and gradually dropping a limb’s movement for example. The right arm is now by our sides and “dead” our movement continues yet the arm stays motionless. And so on….I really would like to experiment with this tomorrow guys. So are we all set on creating 4-8 counts for each piece of music ready for tomorrow to experiment?
